Be a More Engaged and Empowered Patient
Health & Patients
Taking an active role in your care helps you make informed decisions and build stronger partnerships with your providers. Use these tips and questions to guide meaningful discussions.
How to Prepare for Appointments
Arriving prepared builds confidence and makes your visit more effective. Experts at Cleveland Clinic note that simple steps like making lists and asking questions can maximize your time with your provider.1
- Make a list of concerns and questions, prioritizing what matters most.
- Track your symptoms in writing to give your provider a clear picture.
- Bring a list of all medications, including names and dosages.
Questions to ask during your next appointment:
- What is my main area of focus coming out of this appointment?
- What do I need to do to address it?
- Why is it important for me to do this?
Getting Financial Help for Medications
Healthcare costs can feel overwhelming, but support programs exist. In 2025, more than 91 million Americans reported they could not afford healthcare.2 This highlights the importance of financial assistance.
At Keenova, we believe no one should be alone in their pursuit of better health. Beyond providing medicines, we help patients overcome practical and financial barriers. Each year, we provide millions of dollars in assistance for commercial patients to help reduce financial barriers to certain treatments, and our programs support more than 1,000 uninsured and underinsured patients.
Questions to ask your care team about financial help:
- Are there programs to help with out‑of‑pocket costs?
- Who in this office can confirm coverage with my insurance company?
Finding Local Nonprofit Organizations
A new medical diagnosis can bring more questions than answers. Patient advocacy groups provide education, emotional support, and resources.
Keenova partners with organizations such as the National Organization for Rare Disorders, American Association for Respiratory Care, and Prevent Blindness to help amplify patient voices.
Research the patient organizations that can help you and ask your care team to guide you to the right resources and groups.
Questions to ask your care team about advocacy groups:
- Is there a group that can help me learn more about my condition?
- What services does that group offer?
- Is there a forum to connect with other patients?
Empower Yourself
You can become an active partner in your care. Empowered patients ask questions, find resources, and make informed choices that support better health.
